A useful workstation is a combination of furniture and equipment that works together. Start with the desk, chair and storage you actually need, then test the arrangement during ordinary tasks before adding accessories.

Start with the equipment and tasks
List what stays at the workstation: computer, screens, keyboard, mouse and any tools needed every day. Separate those essentials from occasional-use items that can be stored elsewhere.

Choose the desk and chair together

Try the setup in your normal working position. OSHA's workstation checklist considers the chair, work surface and equipment as a system. Buying a chair with many features does not resolve a desk or equipment-layout mismatch by itself.
Add storage only for a defined need
Count the items that need to remain nearby and choose storage accordingly. Check that drawers and doors can open without blocking the chair or another route through the room. Avoid using leg space as the default location for bags, boxes or a cabinet.
Keep frequently used items accessible from your working area. Test reaching for them, then standing up and leaving the workstation. If the arrangement repeatedly requires shifting furniture, revisit the layout.
Check accessory compatibility separately
A monitor arm, keyboard tray or computer holder has its own mounting and movement requirements. Do not assume it fits because it is shown in a desk photograph. Ask what is included and verify compatibility for the exact tabletop and frame.

Finish with a short working trial
- Use the keyboard and mouse in their intended positions.
- Reach the items you use most often.
- Open nearby storage and move the chair away.
- Check that cables and furniture do not obstruct movement.
- Record any measurements or compatibility questions still unanswered.
